Imigongo Art Coop
Project Launch:
Imigongo is a traditional art form in Rwanda that utilizes dried cow dung to create spiral and geometric designs on wood, walls and pottery. With World Connect's support, a small co-op in the village of Gatore in the Eastern Province will be formed to not only pass on the tradition of Imigongo from elders to the younger generation, but also to generate income for the co-op members and the village. The project will focus on setting the co-op up with a bank account and training them with small business management skills while carving out a market for the art, both in nearby tourist locales and the international community. Co-op members will also lead Imigongo workshops in local schools that will reach an audience of nearly 500 young people.
Testimonials
"This project is the most rewarding thing I've done so far in my service. As a PCV, you often don't get to see the change happening, and this project has provided me with that opportunity -- to see how something has impacted the lives of others. After the opening, everyone just was really happy, and it was really great to be a part of it and to know I helped." - Sara, Peace Corps Volunteer
"I will one day build a house with the money made from the Imigongo shop." - Zacharie, Project Leader
