“Our Mothers” - Strengthening Afro-Ecuadorian Cultural Tourism

The El Chota Valley holds great cultural importance due to its establishment as one of the first free territories for Afro-Ecuadorians. The community maintains vibrant practices such as music, dance, poetry and traditions that are unique to Afro-Choteño culture. This proposal will support the creation of an ethnographic museum exhibit titled “Nuestras Mamas” (“Our Mothers”) that serves as a tribute to the notable Afro-Choteña women leaders and their contributions to the community. This process will be led by Afro-Choteño women, youth and local leaders. The “Nuestras Mamas” exhibition will raise awareness of and support for the women of the El Chota community and the larger Afro-Choteño identity.
