Project Launch:

Limón is Costa Rica's Atlantic coastal province. In the South are the Talamanca Mountains, the home of many indigenous communities. A unique history and location have provided Limón with a wealth of cultural diversity. English creole is still spoken in many households.  Afro-Caribbean culture, better known as 'Limonénse' culture, is also embraced. The indigenous Bribrí language can be heard among the indigenous residents in many communities.  Chinese is often heard on the streets in Puerto Limón; and naturally, everyone speaks Spanish. Outside of the school day, there is very little for kids to do in the community. Recently a ‘Guias y Scouts’ troop formed. Troop 110 will not qualify for funding from the national movement until April 2012, so our activities have all been close to home. The troop is eager to take our first camping trip. Two potential locations for 2011 camping trips are the Manzanillo-Gandoca nature reserve and the uninhabited island of Uvita—where Columbus landed! A little financial support could go a long way.  World Connect says, “Bon Voyage.”
