Sustainable Reforestation on Indigenous Family Farms

The Bribri indigenous group lives on a remote reservation in Coroma, which is only accessible by river. With increased development and globalization, the traditional Bribri practices and culture are in danger of being lost. This project will reforest five women-owned small farms so that they can practice traditional Bribri agriculture. The trees will provide shade cover on their farms, improving soil health and crop production, and contributing to the reforestation of a once dense rainforest that was decimated by international banana production.
Final Report: 1-2-18
The project was successful in bringing new tree seedlings to five family farms in the Coroma area. The five women who participated in the program were very excited to have the new seedlings and the new equipment to plant and tend to them on their farms because agriculture is the focus of local daily life and is the primary livelihood of this community.
