Expanding Education Beyond the Classroom: A School Learning Center
Project Launch:
In Concepcion de Pilas, a small, geographically isolated community of about 800 people in southern Costa Rica, access to the Internet and books is a day's travel away. There is no trash collection and the community is one of only 2% in Costa Rica that still lacks access to potable water. Despite these challenges, the community is highly active, having recently launched a community recycling center and constructed an aqueduct. Their next target is the construction of a learning center in the local school, including a library and computer lab. With World Connect's support, the community will establish the learning center to be used during the day by students and at night by the local community and a local youth group. Having already secured a number of book donations, community leaders will be kicking off a literacy program as soon as the learning center is up and running.
